Landing a Customer Discovery Interview – A Script

After defining “what” our two new businesses will be and building landing pages for them (almost complete), we are now working hard on conducting customer discovery interviews. We are building prospect lists and calling them. Cold.

Here is how we are scripting those interviews:

Hi, my name is John Melonakos. I’m thinking about becoming an entrepreneur in <fill in the blank idea>. Before I jump ship and dedicate years of my life to this idea, I’m trying to talk to people that know about <fill in the blank idea>. I ran across you on <fill in the blank source (e.g. LinkedIn)> and you seem like someone that could help me figure this out. Do you have a few minutes to let me share my idea and hear your thoughts?

Also, I like how ATDC staff recommended name dropping Georgia Tech in these interviews. Since ATDC is part of Georgia Tech and since we’re an ATDC member company, we sometimes university name drop too, starting with:  “Hi, my name is John Melonakos in Atlanta with Georgia Tech.”

How is that script? Anything you would change about it?
