Thoughts on Recessions

I’ve seen many people talking about another recession. Some think the cycle is coming around again for that. Others are saying that a recession is not coming because recessions do not come when people expect them to come.

In any case, what can startups do about it?

Nothing! Startups have no capacity to deal with crazy global things.

What does a recession mean for your startup? We started ArrayFire in 2007 before things got bad. Then it got bad. But we did not feel the recession affecting our business very much.

Here are some thoughts on recessions:

  • If you business is selling a pain killer, you should be fine. If it is a vitamin, it may not survive.
  • It becomes easier to hire and retain talent in a recession. It’s sort of a sad thing to say, but it is true.
  • It becomes easier to get immigration visas for international employees, because the big firms are not hogging all the H1-B quotas.

Recessions are terrible things. But startups need not fear them.

What are your thoughts on a recession?
