Startup vs R&D Firm

in Starting Up

Over a lunch this week, Oded mentioned that he reads this blog and doesn’t feel like ArrayFire is a startup. He feels ArrayFire is an R&D firm. He is right.

I have written before about defining the term startup. To me, ArrayFire will always be my startup. I am a co-founder of it. No matter how large it becomes, I will feel it is a startup.

But our customers and employees do not get that feeling as strongly any longer. We have a solid business and do great R&D types of products and services that are well respected in our market. We are over 7 years old now. By most any measure, the applicability of the term startup is fading.

Brinktop on the other hand by any measure is a brand new startup!

What are your thoughts on defining your business as a startup?
