Highlights from Mary Meeker’s Slidedeck

The new Mary Meeker slide deck came out today, as I’m sure reader’s of this blog have already seen. As I was studying Mary’s latest slides, I took notes on the insights I found most interesting:

  • There is still a $20B internet and mobile ad revenue opportunity in the US (slide 5)
  • Google and Yahoo have nearly the same unique visitors in the US; Microsoft has more than Facebook (slide 6)
  • Video is exploding on the internet; sound and data are emerging as the next big internet trends (slide 12)
  • Snapchat accounts for 3X more daily photo uploads than Instagram (slide 14)
  • Youtube receives 100 hours of uploaded video every minute; Dropcam uploads more video than Youtube (slides 17-18)
  • Sound apps that are killing it:  Soundcloud with tons of music uploads; WeChat has over 400M users and 4X yr/yr growth (slide 21)
  • Data apps that are killing it: Waze (recently in the news for >1B acquisition bids); Jawbone Up a personal health data info collector (wrist band); Yelp (slide 23)
  • Facebook is the only big social network whose usage declined from 2011 to 2012; YouTube is seeing huge growth (slide 27)
  • Mobile is 15% of total global internet traffic; in China, mobile is bigger than desktop (slide 32-33)
  • Much more growth still anticipated in smartphone subscribers, currently at 1.5B while dumb phone subscribers at >5B (slide 41)
  • iPad growth since launch has been faster than the growth of iPhones was after launch (slide 44)
  • Excellent chart listing how many times the average user checks their phone per day and for what reasons (slide 52)
  • Interesting slides on wearable and sensor-enabled computing; several slides on QR codes
  • China has free same day delivery in >25 cities with awesome real-time app tracking for any purchase greater than $8 (slide 70)
  • 122k yearly annual CS job openings; only 51k yearly CS graduates in US (slide 88)
  • Huge growing discrepancy between F1 visas granted and H1-B’s granted in US (slide 89)
  • Student loans are out of control ($25k on average per student), cumulatively larger than all credit card debt in US (slide 98)
  • 59% of US federal budget is entitlements, 19% defense, 16% other, 6% interest (slide 115)

When Mary Meeker speaks, I always listen. Her insights are wonderful and filled with useful data that helps paint the picture of important global trends.

In addition to Mary, I have a few other thought leaders that I follow closely. They don’t post frequently, but when they do, their thoughts are worth a close study. These include Paul Graham for startups, Clayton Christensen when he comes out with new insights on disruption, and Matt Might on grad school and other CS topics.

What comments do you have on Mary Meeker’s report? Which thought leaders do you pay close attention to?

I was contemplating adding Mark Suster and Fred Wilson. Definitely people I pay attention to as well, maybe not in the same hang-on-every-word fashion, but still definitely listen to most everything.

I follow both Fred and Mark. And while I think Fred is amazing his daily posting style leads to a high signal-to-noise ratio IMO. OTOH, it appears Mark only posts when he’s got something to say; whenever I see a new post from Mark I think “Okay, gotta reserve 1/2 hour today to read and ponder”; to me his stuff is that good. 🙂
