WebRTC and the Rapid Pace of Browser Innovation

I recently wrote about web browsers and how people are increasingly doing things through the browser. Among those trends is WebRTC which enables seamless Skype-like video calls directly from the browser. A great demo of WebRTC is included in the video below.

WebRTC enables the browser to use an attached video camera and microphone. It is able to provide secure communication and navigation through complicated firewalls. It is a standard protocol which will enable many different platforms to communicate.

One advantage is the promise of simplifying the marketplace for video conferencing. This month alone I have used Skype, Google Hangout, WebEx, GoToMeeting, and Join.me for video conferencing communication. That’s too much.

Last month, the WebRTC conference was held in Atlanta at Cobb Galleria. We met with our partners in the embedded processing space at that conference. Mobile vendors are also aligning themselves with this new standard.

Have you seen WebRTC in your market? What cool browser innovations do you notice taking shape?
