Tonight’s Atlanta Startup Village Recap
Over 450 people registered for tonight’s Atlanta Startup Village. I met several BigCo people there for the first time to explore what this whole “entrepreneurship” thing is all about. One from DHL; one from Nokia.
Some really exciting companies presented. Here is a recap:
SiftIt
- Simply connecting restaurants with suppliers
- Get rid of filing cabinets that chefs use to store suppliers’ info
- A mobile technology solution
- Auto generates orders out to suppliers
- In 20 Atlanta restaurants so far
- Process patent pending
Cubic.fm
- Debating between Atlanta and LA for their startup
- Waaaaay too many words on their slides. Bad bad. Someone needs to say something to them.
- Demo was presented by a co-founder calling in from Turkey
- Fits music to the weather, time of day, and activity you’re doing
- Radio stations are formed based on many environmental or situational attributes
Abate Solutions
- Restaurant ordering technology
- The website design needs work, not very good looking, fonts too small
- Maybe customers don’t want restaurants to know that much about them, sorta creepy
- Goal is to maximize the tables in a restaurant. This technology solution is designed to make things more efficient and more pleasurable for the guests
Dragon Army
- Launching brand new game: Robots Love Ice Cream
- A 2 1/2 degree game
- Monetization through the in-app purchasing of better weaponry
- Additional objectives available on each level to add replay-ability
- 13 developers, 2 games in development at any time
Yik Yak
- An anonymous social networking app that uses the GPS
- Huge user growth
- Perfectly times with other anonymous apps coming out: Secret and Rumr
- Targeted at college campuses
- Up and down votes available
- 5 down votes deletes it
- Yaks shown from 1.5 miles around you locally
- Anyone can see it
- About to break 700k users, all from word of mouth
- Not worried about monetization
- They geofence high schools and the app is rated 17+
It was a great event and really fun to see so much activity in the new Atlanta Tech Village event space.
