The Steve Jobs Movie
I went to see the Steve Jobs movie last night. The movie itself was not that great, but it reminded me of many of the things I had read previously in the Jobs biography.
I took notes during the movie to share here:
- In referring to his lackluster mood towards college attendance, the line was “a system produces a system,” meaning that colleges are not good places for outside the box thinkers and are largely designed to keep people in a box. Of course there are exceptions, but students have to proactively search for those.
- Jobs was ruthless towards original employees; Woz had a kinder heart.
- I mentioned yesterday that I love the word “better.” Jobs did not like “better”; he chose the word “different.”
- Jobs was ruthless in marketing: 1) took out a full page newspaper ad ragging on IBM, 2) used 1984 as an analogy to compare IBM to brainless borg.
- His huge enthusiasm for design, taste, and style is contagious.
- Several of his famous quotes (in the movies below) were shared in the movie.
I came home re-invigorated to build and design great products.
BTW, it was opening weekend at the box office and there were less than 10 of us in the theater which has a capacity of several hundred. I took it as an indication that I live in a very non-tech non-startup-minded part of town.
What motivation have you experienced from the example of Steve Jobs?
