Relatable Startup Role Models

Last weekend, I was on the beach with family. One of the kids was skimboarding, and as I watched I didn’t have a desire to give it a try. Then an adult in the family started to give it a try, and I suddenly became interested. If an adult can try it, so can I. And so I found myself practicing skimboarding. The difference was that the adult was relatable to my situation, while the kid was not.

The kid was also really good at skimboarding, while the adult was not so great. If the adult had been super great, I imagine I would not have been able to relate as well.

There is an analogy to startup role models here.

Mark Zuckerberg is a poor startup role model. You can’t look to his example to figure out how to replicate his success. He probably couldn’t replicate his own success. His celebrity is so large it’s unrelatable.

On the other hand, relatable successful entrepreneurs are in an excellent position to motivate and inspire others on a successful entrepreneurial journey. Atlanta has tons of relatable startup role models. And that number is growing rapidly. It’s one of our biggest strengths.

Who are the relatable startup role models that inspire you?
