Two Gems from Scoutmob’s @Tavani

Last week I attended a Startup Grind meetup where Michael Tavani shared his stories of building Scoutmob. I walked away from the presentation with two gems of note.

Gem #1 – Delighting Customers

The first gem is how Michael focused on delighting customers. I love the word “delight.” There are so many things you can do to keep yourself busy when starting a company that it is easy to forget the simple truth that delighting customers is top priority. You delight customers when you build great stuff and sell it in a delightful way.

I also ran across this Paul Graham video below where he talks about building fabulous software. Go to 1:35 in the video and watch how he talks about really well designed software that delights customers.

Gem #2 – Stay Focused

Scoutmob’s @tavani: We intentionally chose not to go to events. People didn’t even know us. We just focused on our product. #StartupGrindATL

I definitely agree that there are periods of time when startup founders should stick their head in the sand and ignore everything else. There were times when I avoided every startup event for more than a year to take care of critical things. It takes focus.

Those were two valuable messages. Michael has also been producing interesting startup videos at http://ondoers.com/. Check that out!

What are your thoughts on delighting customers and staying focused?
