Entrepreneurship is too hard to do alone. Peer groups are very helpful.
People often speak of the information asymmetry that investors enjoy over entrepreneurs. Investors share information with each other and tend to know much more about the deals that are going on, while entrepreneurs tend to not know much outside of their own company. Peer groups can help diminish that asymmetry.
The best peer groups for founders are those that include true peers, without investors, competitors, advisers, or other non-peers. I’ve enjoyed two great peer groups:
- Entrepreneur’s Organization – only available to founders with companies doing >$1M in revenue.
- ATDC CEO Roundtables – only available to ATDC Select companies. When we were at ATDC, this was a very helpful peer group for me.
For beginning entrepreneurs in the Atlanta area, I would also consider joining the Founder’s Institute or Flashpoint for a more comprehensive crash course in startups. I would also consider networking with entrepreneurs at the Atlanta Tech Village and Hypepotamus.
What peer groups have helped you as a startup founder?
