A Personal Entrepreneurial Thesis

I ran across a wonderful NY Times article today about a Seattle entrepreneur, Richard Barton, entitled “The Art of ‘Something from Nothing‘.” The article makes the point that Barton has a personal entrepreneurial thesis. He looks to start companies that provide markets with information they crave.

He provided travel information to markets with Expedia. Home value information to markets with Zillow. Employment information to markets with Glassdoor. And he’s working on plastic surgery and lawyer testimonial websites too.

In Atlanta there are very successful entrepreneurs who have personal theses repeated across several startups. Two stand out across several individuals:

  • making sales and marketing more efficient through technology tools
  • making the internet more secure

Next month a new team and I will begin building parallel startups. Each of the ideas we are pursuing are inspired by things we’ve done at ArrayFire. But it is not ArrayFire. I can’t yet articulate my personal entrepreneurial thesis but I’m excited for the journey of parallel entrepreneurship to see what bubbles out of it.

What are your thoughts on parallel entrepreneurship and having a personal entrepreneurial thesis?
