Introducing Dyced

in Ideas, Starting Up

One of the two new startups we have been working on (i.e. doing customer discovery around) we named Dyced. We built a simple landing page for the startup.

The idea is to bring the cloud to video walls. Video walls are displays that use multiple TV screens to create a larger display than a single TV can do alone. They are better than projector based systems since they are brighter and do not have problems of shadows. Currently most video walls are driven by expensive server based systems. A better approach would be to offer a SaaS service where customers could upload their video wall content and control their wall via the cloud.

Video walls are used in high end markets like defense and security, scientific visualization, and healthcare. They are also used in low end markets for advertising purposes like bars and airports.

I was super excited by the idea. It seemed we were onto something hot.

Tomorrow I will share what we found as we did customer discovery interviews.

What are your thoughts on video walls?

Good stuff. I love video walls. As for customer discovery, I have a suspicion that a lot of people didn’t like the idea of paying a monthly fee for software to run their own equipment. I’m guessing that they had a preference for purchasing the software outright and managing it in house, regardless of whether that actually makes sense from a cost standpoint or not. Either that, or they use 3rd parties to handle that stuff for them, and the 3rd parties, likewise, would prefer to have a fixed cost and manage it in house. Curious to hear your findings.

Hey Paul, thanks for the comment! Very interesting to hear your thoughts especially after I wrote the follow-on post about how we have decided to stop working on Dyced. Check that out too!
