Hiring Detectives for Business Purposes

I was recently meeting with a group of entrepreneurs and one of them mentioned hiring a detective as a viable option for gathering intelligence in a very important business transaction. It struck many of us as an odd solution.

He went on to explain how many banks hire detectives to investigate business people before taking a substantial risk on them. Kroll is an example firm that is used.

I’m not sure what the moral of this story is, but it is interesting to know that detective hiring is on the table as an acceptable business practice by big firms. Something to watch out for. It is important to watch what you say, do, and email, as I’ve written before.

What are your thoughts on the business practice of hiring detectives to snoop?
