I just read a post in Tech Drawl about the Yo App and SXSW. Ben is a successful entrepreneur from Atlanta, part of an older generation of successful Atlanta entrepreneurs like John Imlay whom he mentions.
The word that stood out to me in his article is “pizzazz.” He basically says that the reason MSA and Peachtree Accounting software were so successful in their day is because they had more pizzazz. He says, “It costs no more to have some pizzazz than to blend into the woodwork; it’s just a matter of making it a priority.”
This is exactly how we like to do business in the technical computing market. It is such a boring market. Very few companies have any pizzazz. NVIDIA does a good job. Fusion IO overdoes it and is sorta disturbing.
When we worked on our recent rebranding we were looking for fun with out being too much. I love the video that came out of that and provides the core elements of our marketing platform around which we can wrap the hardcore technical content.
How does your startup view pizzazz? How do you strike a balance? Do you blend into the woodwork, or do you overdo it and lose professionalism?
