Condescending Statements to Avoid

Oded, our startup integrator, forwarded me a post from LinkedIn that shares several condescending statements to avoid in meetings. Reading that post was a big ouch to me. I am sure I use many of those statements from time to time.

Summarized, the statements are:

  • I don’t need all the details. Let’s just get to the bottom line.
  • Well, these are the facts.
  • You might be right.
  • I’m wondering about ____. Pat, please get back to us on this.
  • You did a great job on that, Pat!
  • I think what Pat is trying to say is…
  • I can see why you might think that. Variant: I used to think that, too.

In many cases, I think people would do well to have a thicker skin with lame statements like these. But it is helpful to hear how some people might perceive statements as condescending and to seek statements that achieve more team building and positive outcomes.

What are your thoughts on these condescending statements?
