Screwed Together

In the cacophony of Twitter, sectarians often declare the absence of divine law. This weekend, I considered a metaphor to describe this fool’s errand.

Think of the threads on screws as divine law, both rigid structures holding things properly in place to fulfill the intended design and function. Without those threads, things fall apart.

Declaring an absence of divine law is equivalent to declaring screws should not have threads. They want to smooth away the vital bits that hold things properly together. They would replace screws with nails while boasting that their weak arguments hit those nails on the head.

No good carpenter ignores a screw when it is needed. The carpenter also knows the force with which to tighten screws for optimal building. To a carpenter, the power to loosen is equal and opposite to the power to bind. Both are essential and equal powers.

Jesus Christ is our carpenter. He loves us by inviting us to adopt His threads on His screws, His divine law. When we fight Him by declaring an absence of His divine law, we approach the nails that were heinously cheered long ago at the cross.

Choosing good over evil is not optional. We must follow God’s law to avoid hurting one another and to find happiness in being properly screwed together. The law is sweet to those who delight in obeying the word of God.

The law begins with the Two Great Commandments: to love God and each other. Everything else is a derivative of those.
