Sell To The Person People Wish They Were

in Marketing, Sales

I was recently with a group of successful entrepreneurs and someone made the statement, “You should sell to the person people wish they were.” That hit home for me.

In our recent re-branding effort, one of our main thoughts was that we wanted to make it fun. So many of the environments where our customers work are stodgy and old school. Yet they are working on some really incredible applications, some of the coolest things going on in the world. We wanted to bring that out and share how awesome it is.

It is easy to just throw together the minimally acceptable marketing materials and website. The easy path is to make everything appear “professional.” In fact, oftentimes startups overdo the “professional” air because they feel that they want the market to think they are bigger than they really are.

My advice is to sell to the person people wish they were. Be hip. Be cool. Embrace that you are a startup and I think you’ll win more deals than through boring supposed professionalism.

What are your thoughts on selling to the person people wish they were?
